Memberships Are Back! I think. Maybe. Hopefully.

If you’re a member on the old s2member system on this site, then this post is mostly for you. I need to tell you one last time that I’m officially ditching that old s2member system and setting up something new. I’ve been in the process of setting this up for months now, but things related to the old system have been causing issues with the new system. Mainly stuff related to restricting access on certain Hobosode posts. So I really need to just tear down the old s2member system. If you like it, I’m sorry.

The new system uses Memberpress. I’m not totally sold on Memberpress working out for us, mainly because I’m still not sure it’s going to work out for our podcast needs. So if you’re signing up on the new system, be prepared to learn how it all works together. Will you have a secret podcast feed like before or will you be forced to visit the website every time you want to see if there’s a new Hobosode. Nobody knows for sure! So if absolutely NEED a podcast feed of current Hobosodes, maybe you should sign up on Patreon because they have a flawless system already in place.

Keep in mind that the new Memberpress system is NOT FINISHED YET. I’m still working on it and I probably will be for awhile more. It might be a few more days, or even weeks, before you have full access to all of the old Hobosodes. As of this writing you only have access to the last few, and you will get access to all of the new ones the minute they are released.

This past year I’ve been looking at all kinds of membership plugins and other 3rd party sites that do the membership thing, but very few of them seem to support secret podcast feeds. Memberpress does have support for it, but I guess it’s a question of how well it works. We’ll see. If Memberpress ends up sucking, I have another one in line to try out.

I wish I didn’t have to kill s2member like this, but it basically hasn’t been working out since the very beginning. Yes, I know I’ve been using it for 6 or 7 years now and it’s served us fairly well, but it’s been at the expense of being a huge piece of shit to work with and maintain. Things break often on it and it’s gotten to the point where I can’t seem to get it fully functional anymore. So I give up on it. I know we’re going to lose some features in the beginning, but hopefully we’ll gain a bunch of new ones soon.

AND ANOTHER THING, I’m probably going to attempt to cancel all of your s2member PayPal auto-payments myself today so you don’t have to mess with it.
